Popeye’s Pasties

Popeye’s Pasties

My pantry is a huge mess at the moment. Last week when I was in a pinch for an easy dinner, I was digging through the messy pantry to get ideas and ingredients when I came upon a suprise.

SUPRISE, MOTHERFUCKER!

Oh no! It’s the dreaded canned spinach! I have no idea where this came from. When did I buy this? Why would I buy this? Perhaps the Evil Jewish Space Laser beamed it into my house! Not today, fuckers! Today I will thwart your plans and turns this canned spinach into something delicious that Popeye the Sailor Man would approve of!

You need:

  • 1 can of spinach, drained and as much liquid squeezed out as possible
  • 4 sheets of puff pastry
  • 3 boiled potatoes
  • 2 eggs
  • 12 oz. feta cheese
  • black pepper and salt

Preparation:

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. Defrost your puff pastry sheets. When the boiled potatoes are cooled down, mash in the drained spinach and feta cheese. Beat one egg and stir it into the spinach mixture.

Cut your puff pastry sheets in to quarters. Add a spoonful of your spinach mixture to each pastry quarter.

Use a fork to crimp down the sides of your pasties. Make sure to keep the filling away from the sides or your pasties might explode in the oven. Repair any little rips or tears by squishing the pastry back together for the same reason.

Place your pasties on a lightly buttered cookie sheet. Beat the remaining egg and brush your pasties with it. You can add sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or any other topping if you like. Bake for 25 – 30 minutes until crisp, flaky, and golden.

Be sure to let your pasties cool down. The filling will be hot, hot, and your little ones will devour these with gusto.

  • Comment from England … I have never, other than on Popeye, never actually seen a can of spinach, to the point where I imagined perhaps it was a marketing ploy in the Fifties by the US Spinach Marketing Board, but yeah. Oh sure, we get spinach here too, but the ‘live’ version. Nevertheless, the baked product looks well tasty!

    • I live fresh spinach! The canned stuff needs a bit of work to taste anywhere near decent ๐Ÿ˜‚ But I am frugal, so I was using it!! (And itโ€™s possible to make something nice, as you can see).
